San Francisco: Part One

Wednesday, January 29, 2014

As some of you may know from my Instagram, the love and I decided to take a spontaneous road trip over to the wonderful (and WARM) San Francisco. Seriously though, this was the most random thing that has probably ever happened to me. The conversation went something like this.

Friday afternoon

Me: I want to take pictures this weekend. I wish I could go to San Fran
Love: We totally should. Maybe we could go next weekend.
Me: Really?! This weekend would actually be perfect, because I don't have work on Monday
Love: Okay! Let's leave tomorrow!
Me: Okay!!!

Saturday Morning

Get in the car at 8am, and start driving to San Fran

So obviously there was a little more conversation and planning, but you get the main idea. We packed up for a short weekend in San Fran, and were off!

I decided mid-way through the car ride that I didn't want to use my big, hefty camera the entire trip. Mainly because this whole thing started because I wanted to take some film pictures, so I decided to stick with that. You guys... I am a little obsessed with film, and I am obsessed with the pictures that came out of it. My camera has the most wonderful light leak that I just adore to pieces! I am not sharing the film today, because of course, I ended up taking a billion pictures with my phone. Don't judge me! I figured I needed to get these out of the way. So yeah, enjoy!
First stop was Baker beach. I seriously couldn't have thought of a more perfect mid-morning stroll. The beach was scattered with fishermen, couples sitting in the sand, and morning runners. Oh, and can't forget about all the furry friends splashing their way down the beach. It had such a pretty view of the Golden Gate Bridge as well! Gah! I could have stayed there for hours!
After this we decided to venture into the city. First stop, china town! Actually, first stop was this awesome bookstore on the way to china town, but I don't have any pictures of it. Sorry!
Then off to the piers...
And that is basically all I took for the first day. We were there for only a short weekend (3 days), so this was our only full day. The day we left to go home we spent the morning traveling over the Golden Gate Bridge to go see Muir beach which was SOOO worth the trip. Seriously, it was such a stunning beach just tucked away into the mountains. Also, such a pretty drive there!
So there you have it. There is bits and pieces of San Fran from the eye of my iPhone. But really, I am so beyond stoked to share the film shots with you. Stay tuned for that!

Until then, I decided to share some random snapshots taken by my love that I just loved and decided to edit. He is quite wonderful at what he does. I love seeing his take on things, and to see how we take similar pictures differently. So enjoy some of his wonderful shots as well!
(Didn't edit this one)
This was actually taken in Winnemucca, Nevada. We decided to stop here for lunch on the way there, and it ended up being a cool little town. We took a stroll after lunch and happened upon this beauty of a church. I with my church looked like this!

So there are some photos from recent adventures. I hope you all enjoy! I just wanted to thank all of you for leaving such kind comments all the time. It seriously makes my day, and I just love you guys! I try my hardest to get back to you, but school has been getting in the way of that. Just know that I read and appreciate every comment I receive, and you guys are seriously just the absolute best. Thank you, and thank you for taking the time to read my random thoughts, and look at my crazy pictures. It means the world!

So remember how last time I said I had a surprise coming up..... TA DA!!!! New blog design everyone!! This has been in the works for some time now, and I am so pleased with how it turned out! A HUGE thank you to Natalia for all your hard work. She is awesome you guys! You can find more of her work here! She is quite the talented lady! Definitely make sure you check her out if you are looking for a new blog design.

So now for all the random things in my life! First off, school started last week! That would explain why I did not blog whatsoever last week. Still trying to get into the groove of things. It has been a year since I have been in school, sooo it is taking longer than usual. But for real, I don't think I have ever been so tired in my life!! I swear all my life consists of is working out, school, work, and homework. The saddest part of it all is that I am kind of loving it, but there needs to be a special time for blogging as well. I mean, duh!

To end an awesome first week of school, my love and I went up the canyon once again, but this time we brought snow shoes!! We had both never been snow shoeing, and we may or may not have had to look up on YouTube how to put the dang things on. Again, who knows if that happened. It was so much fun though!! Now all I want to do is go snow shoeing! I always forget how nice it is to just spend a part of your day up in the mountains, or just surrounded by nature in general. I think that is why I am getting so excited to go to COSTA RICA!! 10 days completely surrounded by nature. Does it get any better than that?!

Of course I have photos to share of our snow shoeing adventure. These pictures are a mixture of photos we both took, but I decided to edit them. I am sorry, but I am not going through and saying who took what. I don't think my love will be offended. Haha and if he is... too bad so sad. :p Just kidding, love you!
Aren't we just adorable.... Hahaha

But really, go to the mountains you  guys. Or if you don't have mountains go someplace where there is no noise. It is a wonderful and needed thing sometimes.

Alright you guys, time for more randomness. So the love and I went and saw Her this weekend.... I am sorry. I really wanted to like it, but it just didn't do much for me. I think it was incredibly creative, and I really loved the look of the movie. Other than that, it was just kind of eh. I really wanted to think differently, but I just can't. Have any of you guys seen it? What are your thoughts? I also really loved the music. The music was pretty stellar.

You guys, I am going to a concert tonight!!!! I haven't been to a concert in MONTHS! I don't know what has happened to me. I think I made my friends go to too many, and now they are all sick of them. Totally understandable. Concerts aren't for everyone. I am going to see two of my favorite local bands at the moment, Strange Family and The National Parks. Some of you may have heard The National Parks before. They got pretty high on the charts on iTunes for a while there. I don't know where they are currently at. Strange Family doesn't have any music out right now that I know of, but The National Parks released their new album on iTunes. CHECK IT OUT!!! It is amazing!

I think that is it for me today. Life is going pretty great as of late. I have nothing to complain about. This weekend I am hoping will be full of exploring FILM once again. I ordered some film off of amazon a couple days ago, and got it in the mail yesterday. So beyond stoked you guys!! Hopefully that will be something to share soon with all of you :)

You guys are wonderful! Have a great weekend!

One of my goals for this next year is to really try my hardest to blog more. I love this little space of mine, and it is often neglected. In order to do that, you will find me blogging about more personal and day to day things. It might get boring, and it might get random, but this is my blog, so that's just how it's going to be! Sorry about it.

The best I could come up with today is sharing some pictures taken throughout the week. Yes, I am becoming one of THOSE bloggers, but I take pictures and I like to share them, no matter how random. For example, there are the few random snapshots taken of me by my love while I wander around his apartment. He seems to have a knack for being a ninja, and catching me pulling the most interesting of faces.
He chooses to date me, I promise! And I realize the above picture is a little blurry, but it captures me and all my glory. Haha

I am not always a homebody. Sometimes I celebrate anniversaries with a certain guy, and take him to see Pixar in Concert.
Just another example of my stunning natural beauty.....

But really you guys, if you have a chance to go to Pixar in Concert, GO!! You will not regret it for a second. You can find a list of concert dates here!

And if you are really lucky, you will take a bunch of random pictures, and realize an old man was photo bombing you the whole time. Well played old man.. well played.
Last but not least, my weekend ended with a little mini adventure up the canyon! The air in Utah has been positively horrendous, so it was nice to get out of it for a while, and breathe some fresh air. There is so much snow up there! It really was the perfect way to end the weekend.
Serenity anyone?
There you have it lovelies! That is my week according to some random iphone snapshots. I love you all lots and lots, and hope everyone had a great first week of the new year. Anything fun happen?

Again, I hope you guys are prepared for the randomness that is about to become of this blog. I sure am!
Also, if any of you wanted to take part in the Blogger Book Swap, the last day to sign up is TOMORROW!! You can find out more about that right here!

P.s- a surprise coming this way soon!

An Interview with Bas

Saturday, January 4, 2014

A little while ago I asked Bas from Let's See... if I could interview her about her wonderful film photography! She thankfully said yes, so now I get to introduce you all to someone absolutely awesome. I first started following her blog, because of her BRILLIANT film photography, but I came to find out that she is just an overall cool human! So everyone, I would like to introduce you to the lovely Bas.

First off, tell everyone where you are from, and a little bit about yourself!
I’m 24, from Cape Town, South Africa. I’m a vegetarian, a coffee slut and I play the saxophone.

Are you in school? If so what are you studying?
I studied music (jazz saxophone) in Cape Town, but this year I’ve been working (teaching and playing in theatre shows, one of which toured Asia for two months). Next year I’m moving to the Netherlands to study again though!

I am a HUGE lover of film. What got you interested in film photography?
I think a mixture of playing around with the Hipstamatic app on my iPhone (it’s a photography app where you choose different films, filters, lenses etc for your photos) and seeing film photography on blogs, mainly from disposable cameras. I played around with a few disposables myself before discovering the Lomography store, and that’s really when I fell in love with film.

Do you prefer color, or black and white?
I go through phases, but sometimes I feel like I could shoot the rest of my life in Black and White.

What are your hopes with your photography?
It’s just a hobby for me. I can’t explain why I love taking photos, but it’s something I can’t seem to get enough of. I’d love to learn more about it all one day when I have some time on my hands, the technical side of things, about equipment, maybe get into digital when I can afford a proper camera.
How long have you been taking pictures in a creative way?
About a year, really. I got my first film camera (Lomography La Sardina) last January.

What inspires your photography?
People. Mountains, beaches, cities, yes, but always people. A photograph is so different with somebody in it.

What is your favorite photograph you have ever taken? Why is it your favorite? What inspired you to take it?
Unintentionally, all my favourites have been taken on the beach. There’s the shoot I did when the weather was grey and misty, and the film just picked up on all the sea colours in the most magical way (pale greens and blues and pinks). My other favourite was when I got all my friends to wake up at 4am with me to catch the sunrise at Muizenberg. I think photos come out the best when you’re having a good time, it’s hard to catch that natural feeling on film, but it’s awesome when you do.

*side note: beware, the seriousness of this interview stops here. Randomness below! Thanks Bas for cooperating. Haha
What is a day in the life of Bas like?
Lots of black coffee, practicing, sometimes teaching, theatre show at night (at the moment I’m halfway through a 3 month run of Rocky Horror).

One direction.. thumbs up or thumbs down?
I’m a jazz musician, I don’t even know if I’ve heard a One Direction song before. Should I be proud of that? ;)

What did you eat for breakfast?
I made a smoothie. Yoghurt, raspberries, strawberries and blueberries! (edit: I typed that answer a few days ago. Today I ate a shit load of gingerbread men for breakfast but it’s Christmas tomorrow so it’s justified, of course).

Do you have any pets?
Um, I had a dwarf hamster but I stepped on it. (Yes)

*side note: I'm sorry, but i died over this. Still laughing

Dog or cat person?
Cat, cat, cat.
Coffee or tea?
I do love long conversations with my friends over loose leaf tea in glass teapots but for every day life I’m a coffee whore. I have the nespresso pixie machine, and I drink three or four cups a day (black, no sugar).

Well there you have it ladies (and some gents). The most lovely Bas (even if she has never listened to One Direction)! Be sure to check out her blog, and other photographs here!
